He or she should be an expert in viticulture, vinification and wine regions on a broader and more advanced level He or she should also know all about wine laws, labeling laws, grape varietals and up-to-date wine industry news. He or she can recommend a wine to you and tell you every nuance of that wine. When dining, it is a good idea to ask the sommelier to your table for help in choosing a wine. It's an excellent way to find great wine among an extensive restaurant list. And more often than not, the sommelier would be thrilled to help you.
